Safely Unfreeze a Frozen Boiler Condensate Pipe
We’ve had a few calls out for frozen condensate pipes and thought you might find the attached pointers useful.
Please note though, only attempt this if it is safe to do so and not if there is pipe break or extreme freezing.
- Turn off the boiler. To prevent further damage or strain.
- Locate the condensate pipe. Typically, this is a small plastic or PVC pipe running from the boiler to an outside drain.
- Use Warm Water. Fill a container with warm (not boiling) water. Pour the water slowly over the frozen section of the pipe. Repeat until the ice is melted. Avoid boiling water, as it can crack the pipe.
- Gently Apply Heat (if needed). Use a hot water bottle, microwaveable heat pack, or a warm cloth to thaw stubborn sections. Avoid using open flames or extreme heat.
- Check the Drainage. Once defrosted, inspect the pipe to ensure water flows freely to the drain.
- Restart the Boiler.
